I can't believe I'm off to Paris this weekend, time has just flown by. Anyway (Drum Roll please) this Sunday sees the final of The Hat Designer of the Year competition at Première Classe so please keep everything crossed for me and wish me luck.<br />
<br />
I am exhibiting three pieces that were inspired/designed for Crown Princess Mette-Marit of Norway.<br />

Chic Pillbox with hand embroidery. Perfect for church services and civic duties.<br />

<br />
<br />
I'm absolutely delighted to report that I have been chosen to go through to the the finals of The HAT Magazine Designer of the Year 2013 in Paris.<br />
<br />
The design brief this year had a 'Royal' theme and was set by Stephen Jones<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I chose to design my collection for Crown Princess Mette-Marit of Norway (inspired by an embroidered Nordic Hood I made for an exhibition at Hat Works last winter); Mette-Marit is a very modern princess, she likes clean, simple lines and neutral palettes. She seems to favour 21st Century version of the Jackie O Pillbox hats and likes headpieces.</div>

<br />
We are absolutely thrilled to be exhibiting at the Hats Work Museum in Stockport. You can find the specially created 'The Curious Journey of Lavinia De La Craft' collection in the 'What's Hot' cabinet alongside 'Ascot Mohawk' and 'Jean' in adjacent cases.<br />
<br />
The exhibition runs till the 9th March 2013 and full details about the museum can be found here:<br />

We also delighted to have a headdress in their new exhibition 'Redesigning Fashion', here's a sneaky peek!<br />

Want to see more? Head over to Hat Works. 'Redesigning Fashion' looks at recycling and sustainable fashion, starting with the 'Make do and Mend' movement of the 1940's right up to the modern day 'objet trouvé' work of Little Shilpa, a fascinating and thought provoking exhibition.<br />

Five years in the planning and spanning a hundred years of cinema, from Charlie Chaplin's 'The Little Tramp' to models from 'Avatar', every iconic outfit is gathered under one roof.<br />
<br />
The exhibition is beautifully displayed and includes some fascinating interviews with actors and designers, explaining how costumes help with the creation and development of characters.<br />
<br />
From the glamour of 'Breakfast at Tiffany's' to the urban grit of 'The Bourne Identity' there is something for every film fan.<br />
<br />
<br />
Here are some of my favourites:<br />
<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

Ginger Rogers wore this Edith Head gown in 'Lady in the Dark' in 1944. At the time it was the most expensive gown ever created for a movie, allegedly costing $35,000.<br />

On the left the infamous velvet dress worn by Vivien Leigh in 'Gone with the Wind' designed by Walter Plunkett and on the right the incredible bugle bead gown worn by Joan Crawford in 'The Bride Wore Red' designed by Adrian. In old black and white movies, journalists would often be depicted scrambling for a telephone booth to break a story to their editor; that's how Twitter feels when there is an important event on; a sort of avalanche of information, but one particular comment really stood out for me:<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhwJVC4IXN56OQi4qbYpCZ5ADHlCAvkGo2UyRLzD1XFoPszj-66_8i23G2h0ELxOxPfJWvs5642S9Izzo4RxeSLU63O3User1iNTccDX4ofIwLtotvvCx0H_xC_gH8IkLzi-0FgTmjmhII/s1600/Picture+6.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="230" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhwJVC4IXN56OQi4qbYpCZ5ADHlCAvkGo2UyRLzD1XFoPszj-66_8i23G2h0ELxOxPfJWvs5642S9Izzo4RxeSLU63O3User1iNTccDX4ofIwLtotvvCx0H_xC_gH8IkLzi-0FgTmjmhII/s400/Picture+6.png" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And you know what, it's kind of hard to argue with that statement......</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I was also rather amused by Bruce Oldfield's observations on the BBC's 'Breakfast' show this morning; he was explaining that most of the gowns on the red carpet had come straight from the runway and the ladies of Hollywood, although sharing the same dress size as models, are usually shorter and that quite often you see them standing with a 'puddle of dress around them' as there hasn't been time to alter the hem. Fair enough. He then went on to add "Apart from Jennifer Lopez.....someone's done her hem........BADLY!"</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<br />
So we all know that Theatre is in my blood, blah, blah, blah and that I've been involved with it in some capacity since I was three years old, blah, blah, blah but that I haven't worked in it for several years having decided to concentrate on Millinery, blah, blah, blah and that if I had a penny for every time somebody had asked me if I missed it I would be a very wealthy woman.<br />
<br />
Do I miss it? Well, I loved it and it formed a huge part of my life and without a doubt has had a massive influence on me as a designer, but I like new challenges and I like having a bit more control over my life.<br />
I always loved touring, but you do live in a bubble, and that's not always terribly healthy.<br />
<br />
So, for those reasons, I tend not to be one for Nostalgia, I think too much backward glancing can become rather suffocating and that dwelling on the pain and glory of one's own personal history is not particularly helpful or fulfilling.<br />
<br />
However, as we all know, life has a way of biting one on the derriere and so, last Friday, whilst visiting the 'Theatre and Performance Galleries' at the Victoria and Albert Museum (for the first time in their new home) I ran smack bang into my past and a huge emotional jolt.<br />
<br />
There we both were, exiles from our own youth, me and The Theatre Museum (formally of Covent Garden) reunited in the eaves of the V&A, but with extra Adam Ant; we didn't know whether to laugh or cry.<br />
I had stumbled upon my first true love, entombed in humidity controlled glass cabinets, an incredibly poignant moment; I felt like I'd come home to a Ghost Town of myself.<br />
<br />
I could feel the tears welling up, but decided that, with just me and a Museum Assistant present (the fact that the Gallery was empty and stuffed in the attic at the V&A probably explains why The Theatre Museum was forced to close it doors due to lack of public interest several years ago), having some sort of emotional episode/possibly being sectioned in front of Margot Fonteyn's Tutu wasn't necessarily a good look.<br />
<br />
I did hold it together, but spent a long time in a somnambulist trance wandering around the exhibition, experiencing a combination of awe, wonder, pride and humility. It made me realise how truly magnificent, inspiring, powerful and magical great museums can be.<br />

<br />
I have recently returned from San Francisco where the Halloween preparations had been dialled up to 11. Sadly I've never managed to be in the States on October the 31st, but it's definitely on my 'to do' list because, behold the size of this baby:<br />

<br />
Beautiful location, lovely people, amazing seafood and great wine. Not only that but also, surely, one of the most comprehensive lists of prize winning categories ever compiled for a Halloween party:<br />

<br />
As we all know Shannen Doherty would definitely play me in a 'Made for TV' Biopic of my life and let's not forget 'Charmed' also gave us Julian McMahon, who later went on to play Dr Christian Troy in Nip/Tuck, but in my head will always be 'The Source of All Evil'. Ahh, Bless!<br />
<br />
Anyway, after a quick google it turned out that the 'Charmed' House or Halliwell Manor is actually in Angelino Heights in LA, or 1329 Carroll Avenue to be precise; this makes perfect sense when you think about the filming logistics.<br />
<br />
<br /><br />

<br />
So last Thursday, after a trip to LACMA to see the Tim Burton exhibition, I headed over to Echo Park to have a sticky beak and it turns out it's not the only famous house on the block, because residing at 1345 is the Michael Jackson 'Thriller' House.<div>Good to see they put the bins out.<br />

I always manage to set off the metal detector or have something in my hand luggage that requires some serious rootage from the security staff. I did get asked to remove my boots (it wasn't shoes off for everybody at Heathrow this time), and Mr Rockwife said that he had seen one of the security ladies eyeing them up as I walked in; I suspected she just wanted to look inside them to see where they were from; she should have just asked; Carvela Darling!<br />
<br />
Had shrimp and Margaritas on Santa Monica Pier Wednesday night at Bubba Gumps; I now realise this is a 'loosely' themed chain restaurant based on one of the narrative threads of 'Forest Gump'. However at the time, having been up for the best part of 24 hours, I didn't really put two and two together; I just thought it was a TGI's kind of place, so when our Clark Kent lookalike waiter sat down at our table and asked if we wanted to partake in a 'Forest Gump' Pop quiz, I thought 'Random, but when in Rome'; now, obviously, it makes more sense; Mr Rockwife did quite well, I only managed to get Nike and Buttocks correct.<br />
<br />
Oh yes and another fabulous thing about America is that you become miraculously slimmer; I bought a denim skirt in Santa Monica and the lovely sales girl had to bring me Size 4 to try on. Size 4? SIZE 4!!!! I'm going to factor in a bit of vanity sizing, because I'm not a Size 8 in the UK, but even still I'm definitely buying all my clothes from America from now on!<br />

It all started last night when I decided to download an episode of Nip/Tuck from iTunes; I was an avid fan, watching Seasons 1 & 2 on Channel 4 and then catching up with Seasons 3 & 4 (after Sky purloined it) on box sets; but I'd rather fallen behind with my viewing since then and for some random reason decided I felt like dipping my toe back in the surgically enhanced waters and, reader I loved it and promptly ordered Seasons 5 & 6 from Amazon today <FYI, at the moment, a much better deal than downloading from iTunes> It's dark and sharp and funny and a brilliant satire about the demands of modern beauty.<br />
<br />
And then today (sandwiched in between a conversation about phobias; clowns and moths for my Holistic friend and overripe bananas for me, because they remind me of my own mortality and withering decay, thanks for asking) I spotted this: <br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">And it made me remember the completely brilliant, but apparently, rather controversial promotional campaign for the 'Six Feet Under'; which featured amongst others, these two advertisements:</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />

See what I did there, when in Rome and all that.<br />
<br />
Anyway the last time I was a Bridesmaid I looked like this:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi7W-HYiMtX7QfOP3Lyj_vxxOPHjcrTafFMLrxFm1FiiH8yQRgEOruu3K81fMoXNMF40S8GCn3PEX4gBQKlXNCeWWDI2h56LGTzhFnGgHChrjNgSA86YZkdpDJlS8ix6UY2L3hV-92ay-Y/s1600/sc00020cd5.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi7W-HYiMtX7QfOP3Lyj_vxxOPHjcrTafFMLrxFm1FiiH8yQRgEOruu3K81fMoXNMF40S8GCn3PEX4gBQKlXNCeWWDI2h56LGTzhFnGgHChrjNgSA86YZkdpDJlS8ix6UY2L3hV-92ay-Y/s640/sc00020cd5.jpg" width="475" /></a></div><br />
I'm the small grumpy one holding the hand of my cousin Janice, and no I don't believe we did arrive in the yellow van, although it would have worked perfectly with our outfits.<br />
<br />
In my new role of Maid of Dishonour and International Bridal Stylist I have found myself discussing many sartorial matters with the Bride in electronic missives that fly back and forth across the pond and this week we have been mostly contemplating veils, headpieces and cats doing hilarious things on youtube and important academic webcasts; yes Murano, that's you.<br />
<br />
It's a funny old world, because recently I thought I'd rather fallen out with Bridal Veils; I just couldn't see anything aesthetically pleasing in them, even K Middy's very romantic, Italian looking silk tulle left me a bit cold and thinking about the drippy hair TV exiting girl from 'The Ring'; and then, last weekend, this happened:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhChmT4pGZfSmFReBYRYfJxlsxJLLrTpObwqVSbImWZ2-32o38FuK1dynlnDr-aXBDINllYuGIuhhf4xrBQpjingAqX9gEVccVyjHtEdfCiGRshDx8CkhtmvH2aNbp6qxFaxShThEuQ7OQ/s1600/article-2010250-0CD2F94600000578-6_634x754.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhChmT4pGZfSmFReBYRYfJxlsxJLLrTpObwqVSbImWZ2-32o38FuK1dynlnDr-aXBDINllYuGIuhhf4xrBQpjingAqX9gEVccVyjHtEdfCiGRshDx8CkhtmvH2aNbp6qxFaxShThEuQ7OQ/s640/article-2010250-0CD2F94600000578-6_634x754.jpg" width="538" /></a></div><br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Kate Moss I fell 'Head over Heels' in love with you; I've not always understood the fuss about you, yes you're gorgeous and you look good in clothes, but you're a model so as far as I'm concerned that's sort of your job. Sigh!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />

I'm wondering if this photo was deliberately set up to prove that she wasn't in fact wearing an electronic ankle tag that prevented her leaving the Principality. Hmmm......<br />
<br />
And what will my Bride be wearing? Well you'll just have to wait and see.<br />

Yours; soon to be languishing in a prison cell in Monaco,<br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg28VZfe1q2Qtdc3AVEJEFZo5AtePad8X7E4lM5FHMTz0vVmuZzBZHc2vfzzUsBh-570eN5Xy884oXp_XlzGTboc7Gf3J_OHiU5gXRC1MO_6Ygk5Ak1Tf1-M1nNPBKKITKtoCGtzZYKHgc/s1600/article-1387115-0C10688B00000578-507_634x822.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg28VZfe1q2Qtdc3AVEJEFZo5AtePad8X7E4lM5FHMTz0vVmuZzBZHc2vfzzUsBh-570eN5Xy884oXp_XlzGTboc7Gf3J_OHiU5gXRC1MO_6Ygk5Ak1Tf1-M1nNPBKKITKtoCGtzZYKHgc/s640/article-1387115-0C10688B00000578-507_634x822.jpg" width="491" /></a></div><br />
<br />
I personally was delighted that they have taken inspiration from two of my favourite guilty pleasures:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEisyljC7fnKWepfu76NYyNIuHNnP-AkyW6O-1oL_zRh6LQ4GUNqyKdaN00ce3oa-ejAD5zw5EVu-rML_xUwxyjMGvTG_3cQwZsHJz4dAuXhhdwSxegyWiVA_zF3btgQXDHP3-dZSq5YGYo/s1600/71aa709374a37349d1f9d20cd1780e24.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEisyljC7fnKWepfu76NYyNIuHNnP-AkyW6O-1oL_zRh6LQ4GUNqyKdaN00ce3oa-ejAD5zw5EVu-rML_xUwxyjMGvTG_3cQwZsHJz4dAuXhhdwSxegyWiVA_zF3btgQXDHP3-dZSq5YGYo/s1600/71aa709374a37349d1f9d20cd1780e24.jpg" /></a></div><br />
I loved this episode of 'Make It Or Break It' where the 'Rock Rebels' (The Rock is the name of their Elite Training Gym; see what they did there, seamless) had to dress up for a photo shoot in the style of extras from a Billy Idol video circa 1984.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgOkVCgejNv17DD9JC0NMZWMqjojqJlJDpeWMZvKy-0WBTGSpNmv3tfWVZqOA5ud7OVIoSng4DwgqUAcliGG6sfgJqv5kDNZr8Vs_SjG2lc0p4Sgk6gxQrwv65WwMrOM50_VT6IBPB1rbo/s1600/All-Halliwells-Eve-charmed-444148_396_500.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgOkVCgejNv17DD9JC0NMZWMqjojqJlJDpeWMZvKy-0WBTGSpNmv3tfWVZqOA5ud7OVIoSng4DwgqUAcliGG6sfgJqv5kDNZr8Vs_SjG2lc0p4Sgk6gxQrwv65WwMrOM50_VT6IBPB1rbo/s1600/All-Halliwells-Eve-charmed-444148_396_500.jpg" /></a></div><br />
And of course, the genius that was 'Charmed'. There is a brilliant gag in this episode 'All Halliwell's Eve' about acrylic hairpieces not being able to time travel and this little gem of dialogue:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhG3nnit5lTF3IJOOcZBe7GAkhXIC71MhnXQLupzavLO3BvaYOtZZursk-K5CDQynmMqC0J1kzCTa8gyp9oil8ttSPl0xLYBnL0ziW387bCGFakDeYVO35Y_8vCby8bpxnH_7s8lTak_xk/s1600/tumblr_l5eipjvxZV1qcnsf8o1_500.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhG3nnit5lTF3IJOOcZBe7GAkhXIC71MhnXQLupzavLO3BvaYOtZZursk-K5CDQynmMqC0J1kzCTa8gyp9oil8ttSPl0xLYBnL0ziW387bCGFakDeYVO35Y_8vCby8bpxnH_7s8lTak_xk/s1600/tumblr_l5eipjvxZV1qcnsf8o1_500.png" /></a></div><br />
<br />
Right, I don't know about the rest of you, but I need a cuppa and a bacon butty........<br />

<br />
I'd like to say a big 'Congratulations' to Wills and Kate; she looked lovely and I'm so pleased she went with McQueen. No it wasn't jaw droppingly different, but it was never going to be and I thought that Kate and her sister looked elegant, dignified and serene; which in these situations is the name of the game.<br />
<br />
My other favourite moments of the day were; Boris Johnson giving a 'shout out' to Pam from the Fenchurch Street Branch of Moss Bros, for ensuring he looked 'smart and presentable' on the day (Pam, something tells me that a large bouquet and box of chocolates will be winging it's way to you from Head Office) and Grazia's Paula Reed saying she was "waging a one women war against fascinators'; standing ovation at Rockwife Heights for that statement Miss Reed.<br />
<br />
Which leads me neatly onto today's Millinery display or in Samantha Cameron's case, lack of:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjXHi1vk2omnX7dCQhko8WA27K0zrUFe2s9vwZGzL8rH35M8LrfrO-5WcReBKr-6ShSDYTxmFMD62Fb1VC2z5-QUQlipJVfDc4Y8ZQOBXe2xCGL3CFeUe6Or2xqxEwEQ_IGDbBB7kLCVMw/s1600/Sam+Cam.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjXHi1vk2omnX7dCQhko8WA27K0zrUFe2s9vwZGzL8rH35M8LrfrO-5WcReBKr-6ShSDYTxmFMD62Fb1VC2z5-QUQlipJVfDc4Y8ZQOBXe2xCGL3CFeUe6Or2xqxEwEQ_IGDbBB7kLCVMw/s400/Sam+Cam.png" width="336" /></a></div><br />
Yes, Mrs Cameron I know those are bejewelled clips from Erdem, but can I ask you a question? Are you Blair Waldorf from the American Teen Drama 'Gossip Girl'? No? Then please put a hat on.<br />
<br />
There was an awful lot of this sort of thing in the Abbey today:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjm_w0K5I_Ue5yrls2D0HSJHUezjQnpe2KplG5pJ_uWyNob8POUpLfNbAhzvYb_50D5AGntV2lATNCavyr4whl6ngLYVrEDI4TFZ4w2Z-_ArAw_-o2Ue4dIVWaxH_9W5F-tT_PwuEptvzA/s1600/Picture+9.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="465" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjm_w0K5I_Ue5yrls2D0HSJHUezjQnpe2KplG5pJ_uWyNob8POUpLfNbAhzvYb_50D5AGntV2lATNCavyr4whl6ngLYVrEDI4TFZ4w2Z-_ArAw_-o2Ue4dIVWaxH_9W5F-tT_PwuEptvzA/s640/Picture+9.png" width="640" /></a></div><br />
I believe that Philip Treacy made 36 hats for today's wedding, and whilst they are spectacular works of art and feats of engineering I'm not quite sure how well they work outside the arena of 'High Fashion'.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSz4ZKWJAY6NcNNfCV2_S4AR1fg7lMeWFBjJXgvQafehnCIJh9RVBNhfFj7vcoTGfhRWJR_LXwCy-yNMiPthqcS4-qyLr-RaCCR9CqhOjSaE8fS9yDitI1_rL8jtmHnFkW2rOuhpQSqbI/s1600/Treacy+Hats+2.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="490" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSz4ZKWJAY6NcNNfCV2_S4AR1fg7lMeWFBjJXgvQafehnCIJh9RVBNhfFj7vcoTGfhRWJR_LXwCy-yNMiPthqcS4-qyLr-RaCCR9CqhOjSaE8fS9yDitI1_rL8jtmHnFkW2rOuhpQSqbI/s640/Treacy+Hats+2.png" width="640" /></a></div><br />
Posh looks like she works for The Addams Family Airline, Beatrice is actually scaring me, she looks like a satanic vanity mirror, Tara PT is running away with Cirque du Soleil to perform in their new show 'La Luna Racquet', Eugenie is in a Sixth Form production of 'The Rivals', and Zara can't wait to get to her next official engagement; a 'Galaxy Quest' convention, where she will be presenting prizes for the 'Best Reproduction Costume'.<br />
<br />
Even the Queen suffered a bit today from a form of Millinery Malaise:<br />
<br />

Normally nobody rocks a hat like The Queen, but there's something about this one that looks a bit 'Boxy' and homemade. It somewhat resembles what used to be known (rather sniffily) as a 'Dressmakers' Hat. These were usually pre-made shapes or forms that could be covered by Dressmakers to enable them to make matching hats for their clients ensembles, or were 'cut and sewn' rather than blocked. It just doesn't look quite right, it's got a sort of 'cake tin' vibe.<br />

Still HM looks lovely in primrose and I'm sure a splendid day was had by all and that by now nobody is still wearing their hat. Huzzah!<br />

Where are my TRRROUSERS?<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">Way way back many centuries ago, not long after the bible began, I spent a large chunk of 1994 working on 'Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor® Dreamcoat'. It was the UK Tour with Phillip Schofield (no, really, and I believe he even dusted off the old Dreamcoat for Sunday's Dancing on Ice programme) at the helm as Joseph, some animatronic camels and quite a lot of dry ice.<br />

</div><div><div><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">One of my charges was the lovely Graham Hoadly (playing the role of Simeon) and quite often the cry of 'Dresserella! Where are my TRRROUSERS?' could be heard echoing along the backstage corridors. It became something of a standing joke due to the unbelievable number of costume quick changes that the show demanded every night. Let's just say that if Dressing ever became an Olympic Event, every member of the Joseph Wardrobe Team would be a Gold Medallist!</div></div><div><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"><br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi4H_cmHdkoP2DBF5oxPBLRQeY36DwuZI57pJ5ywwMNuMOkqfXyUdN7KizBB8GtE-pHDUHkYgJjlaPK9EENiDq7DSeI2GQJbwVJY0l__ZwvSCWQbBHli_tt6rzESmZnGj3ucqk0hjKLWuM/s1600/Picture+1.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi4H_cmHdkoP2DBF5oxPBLRQeY36DwuZI57pJ5ywwMNuMOkqfXyUdN7KizBB8GtE-pHDUHkYgJjlaPK9EENiDq7DSeI2GQJbwVJY0l__ZwvSCWQbBHli_tt6rzESmZnGj3ucqk0hjKLWuM/s1600/Picture+1.png" /></a></div><br />
This is the best reference I could come up with and sadly old Max is sitting down, so if you do find a workable link for this sequence I would grateful to view it.<br />
<br />
And Finally(carrying on with the Bond theme)....<br />
<br />
How fabulous is the new Virgin Atlantic commercial:<br />

Love it! Remember to keep your eyes peeled for Max's TRRROUSERS!<br />

Last week Glee brought us their version of 'The Rocky Horror Show' and I absolutely love this Magenta costume; I'm not entirely sure why, but it just seems a perfect reinterpretation.<br />
<br />
I tried to bring panniers back last year (I thought if Justin could do it with sexy, I could do it with 18th Century Ladies underpinnings), but alack it wasn't to be.<br />
<br />
I tell you what though Ladies, don't knock it till you tried it; it makes your waist look Teeny Tiny and it prevents anybody sitting next to you on public transport. Two birds, one stone.<br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKb_ugUoCazkx4LIU2EUUVErM3kgQXfjSjYh4JCNMF9zEmAwXsjImmT37xhu2rCOL49XGgMCjfyLtbcp7UqacbBN-Am9zFhWIX3hcYi7HkJjKWi_YOengOq_JIlVQp83HYat_R40yFjKE/s1600/article-1330562-0C1AEC7E000005DC-115_634x688.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKb_ugUoCazkx4LIU2EUUVErM3kgQXfjSjYh4JCNMF9zEmAwXsjImmT37xhu2rCOL49XGgMCjfyLtbcp7UqacbBN-Am9zFhWIX3hcYi7HkJjKWi_YOengOq_JIlVQp83HYat_R40yFjKE/s400/article-1330562-0C1AEC7E000005DC-115_634x688.jpg" width="368" /></a></div><br />
Now while I wish them all the best, my overriding thought was "Goodness me, you'd not have to have a superstitious bone in your body to put that Rock on your finger". Maybe it was because Kate also choose to wear blue, that I had an instant flashback to Charles and Diana's engagement press call.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjBzHTGFpj9xHCyuOVaYviLqoSeJf_58Ps4QtVf68Z8fWxXz6kiaS3OND9CoF7Em2Zn6Kn2AWF2Xt3HRoLvjthyphenhypheniVLAg-lq08HvJwE6IG1w5WHbDiC5QDsGkAshqxYbjVCAgg_uDFDdCh8/s1600/prince-charles-with-his-fiancee-lady-diana-spencer-after-announcing-their-engagement-february-1981.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjBzHTGFpj9xHCyuOVaYviLqoSeJf_58Ps4QtVf68Z8fWxXz6kiaS3OND9CoF7Em2Zn6Kn2AWF2Xt3HRoLvjthyphenhypheniVLAg-lq08HvJwE6IG1w5WHbDiC5QDsGkAshqxYbjVCAgg_uDFDdCh8/s1600/prince-charles-with-his-fiancee-lady-diana-spencer-after-announcing-their-engagement-february-1981.jpg" /></a></div><br />
And sadly we all know how that story ended.<br />
<br />
I'm not suggesting for one moment that William and Kate's relationship will travel the same path; they have been together a long time and seem happy, relaxed and, I hope, 'in love'. Whatever that means.......<br /><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjncSLVwH96gRsihoDEPf9NDf8pSEibR2QNuhybUrmuZyWIVq9GU4nRwcpyLd1P71W2UgLfjrpMOHSgHM9vPyXF3bnoEUB252HVkdXbGGD4UHJPy-dUm1HfwSxF2iBMa3SQfovcmv6ZxOI/s1600/article-1330353-0C1A6E31000005DC-491_634x564.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjncSLVwH96gRsihoDEPf9NDf8pSEibR2QNuhybUrmuZyWIVq9GU4nRwcpyLd1P71W2UgLfjrpMOHSgHM9vPyXF3bnoEUB252HVkdXbGGD4UHJPy-dUm1HfwSxF2iBMa3SQfovcmv6ZxOI/s1600/article-1330353-0C1A6E31000005DC-491_634x564.jpg" /></a></div><div><br /></div>The Dress is always top secret, we know it will be a British Designer and lots of big names are speculating about the finished garment. This sketch is Elizabeth Emanuel’s take on it.<br /><br />
<br />
Which leads me rather neatly to Diana's wedding dress (designed by Elizabeth and David Emanuel).It is inevitable that whatever Kate wears on her Wedding Day there will be comparisons to Diana's dress and lots of archive footage accompanied by talking heads where the phrases 'big', 'poofy', 'Fairy Tale' will be used with gay abandon and one or more jokers who will say 'Ohh, wasn't it creased'.<br />
<br />
Yes, enormous Silk Taffeta Gown, small horse drawn carriage, these things happen and let's face it, with hindsight it wasn't the biggest problem of the day.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6xJ9H3kCm_Wy_mgURf0BWI9FQ3QmwHhEteZQ0syUGVQkJrk-9t-az-KyecvG7qqJcWMk0APMFuEuvcVGhibnmJ6ezmVAQacuQVjyJVVOWXXc9WqD2_b9g41b_WvV9QQ-0pSREhEcVkIQ/s1600/princess-diana-wedding-gown1.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6xJ9H3kCm_Wy_mgURf0BWI9FQ3QmwHhEteZQ0syUGVQkJrk-9t-az-KyecvG7qqJcWMk0APMFuEuvcVGhibnmJ6ezmVAQacuQVjyJVVOWXXc9WqD2_b9g41b_WvV9QQ-0pSREhEcVkIQ/s1600/princess-diana-wedding-gown1.jpg" /></a></div><br />
Princess Diana was, in many ways, The Last Fairy Tale Princess. A demure, beautiful, innocent girl who seemingly was swept of her feet by a handsome prince, just like in our bedtime stories. She wore pretty dresses and sparkling jewels and danced at the White House with John Travolta, (because unfortunately her Prince had two left feet, but we let that one slide) but then she got very sad and the truth came out and I think we were all just a little heartbroken.<br />
<br />
First there was the Andrew Morton Book (which, at the time, my Mother considered an act of treason), followed by the divorce and then her untimely death. Only this time there wasn't a poisoned apple and a glass coffin and a Prince's kiss, just a rather ill-advised shrine in Harrods.<br />
<br />
What I find fascinating about Diana's wedding dress (and I have found myself getting strangely obsessed in the past couple of years) is that every time I've seen it, it has had a different tale to tell.<br />
The first time I saw it (in the flesh, so to speak) was fairly soon after the wedding. At the time there was a sort of travelling royal wedding show that went around the country so that the Hoi Polloi could have a look at the frock and the shoes and slices of wedding cake and the huge array of toasters that the royal couple had been bought as wedding gifts; that sort of thing.<br />
So there it was in a glass case all shiny and new, symbolising Pomp and Circumstance and Royal matrimonial bliss. Ahhh, we all went, wouldn't be lovely to marry a prince.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgpKZ5-zyn_F5G5HXhDC7ZBBOX_BA3C6JBMcbwcfTpw6E0K-5JQ1khEC9OPMz73supmX8AHNiNwHoeQQ9ewvEd4-jt0j6qnJEw_8GHe-iXzaTPgm2nq52P15SFnlKWdz5dIhrsln8A2On0/s1600/Picture+4.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgpKZ5-zyn_F5G5HXhDC7ZBBOX_BA3C6JBMcbwcfTpw6E0K-5JQ1khEC9OPMz73supmX8AHNiNwHoeQQ9ewvEd4-jt0j6qnJEw_8GHe-iXzaTPgm2nq52P15SFnlKWdz5dIhrsln8A2On0/s1600/Picture+4.png" /></a></div><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div>The next time I saw it was about 10 years later (around the time that Andrew Morton's book was published), when it was part of the Royal Dress Collection at Kensington Palace. Still in it's glass case, but looking as if it had aged 100 years; like a media savvy Miss Havisham.<br />
<br />
And the last time I saw it was at Althorp, in August of this year, where it just looked (for so many reasons) utterly tragic:<br />
<br />
